Results for 6 January 2021

The results for our monthly mug for January 2021 are set out below.  The NTP for the 12th was placed on the 14th by error and the record sheet for was not returned so I don’t know who was the closest on this hole.  If someone who played the 14th towards the end of their round can remember who was listed as closest on the 14th could you please let me know.

The delay in publishing the results has been caused by two players who were in contention for a prize saving scores which did not agree with their signed scorecards.  One player noticed their problem and notified the scoring desk of the issue.  This also meant that the list of ball rundown prizewinners  announced on the day contained some errors.  The list shows the corrected results.

It is the responsibility of each player to ensure that the scores on their own scorecard are correct (and agree with the score recorded for them by their fellow player) AND that the computer-produced score from the scan agrees with the signed score.  If they don’t agree the player must edit the scores so that the saved score and the manual scores are the same.

When you are checking the computer’s score with what you have recorded on your scorecard, note that in stableford rounds, the computer shows stableford points and in stroke rounds the computer shows your NET score.

During the period when the Pro Shop (mostly Greg) was entering scores, Greg gave me feedback on a number of occasions about the poor quality of many scorecards (both accuracy and legibility).  Can everyone please take extra care with the filling out of scorecards and in ensuring that the saved scores agree with your scorecard.  Within the next week or so, we will be introducing rules (and penalties) to deal with incorrect scores being submitted.

These errors in saved scores also mean that, to protect the integrity of associated events (Race to October, Eclectic), I need to manually edit the results for the two players involved – which means these results will be delayed until I have had time to make the corrections and process the results.

Regards,

Colin Brigstock

A pleasant surprise for some players today.  At yesterday’s Committee meeting, due to our healthy financial position, we decided to increase the number of prizes on offer each week:

  • Adding $10 credit for 3rd place in each grade
  • an increase in the $5 ball rundown from 10 players to 15 players.

Well done to those players who were “among the money” today.

We have 43 hams up for grabs, including 19 random draws.

To be eligible for the Random Card Draw hams, the player must have played 5 Vets events during 2020 and be present at the time of the draw.

Well it has been a very busy week with the 19 Man Shootout held on Monday. After nearly 6 hours the last man standing was Kevin Henderson. Congratulations Kevin. Well done to all players, it was a great day. Then on Wednesday we had 60 players with some very high scoring results listed below.

Year End Presentation Event

Alf is currently having discussions with club management about the options we might have for holding a lunch time function after golf on a Wednesday in December (probably to coincide with our Ham Day on 16th December).

As soon as we have confirmation of what we can do (both in terms of hit-off times and lunch arrangements) I will let you know.

Individual Knockout

Last Friday Phil Smith and Paul Wallace played the final of the Vets Individual Knockout.

In an epic battle with both players playing well under their handicaps, it was all square after 18 holes.  Paul Wallace then prevailed to win at the 19th.

Good luck to all players. The renovations are progressing well. Not long to go with all looking good. Next week’s event is Booth and Partners Single Stableford. All this weeks results are below.

Each of you has been entered into the time sheet system on Monday across a range of start times starting at 8:38.

PLEASE IGNORE THE START TIME AGAINST WHICH YOU HAVE BEEN LISTED.  We will all be hitting off as one group at 8:30.

The purpose of listing you in the timesheet system was threefold: to register each of you as playing on the day, to reserve the timeslots for this event and allow me to get current GA handicaps to calculate daily handicaps for the event.

As a reminder, the shootout will be conducted as follows:

  • A player’s score on each hole will be their net stroke score on the hole (I’ll have a sheet setting out how many shots each player gets on each hole)
  • The player with the highest score on each hole is eliminated with remaining players progressing to the next hole.  At the early holes, to keep the field moving, players who have bettered the highest recorded score will proceed to the next tee and commence hitting off.  This process continues until we have one player remaining after the 18th
  • In the event of a tie for the highest score there will be a putt off among the ties to determine who will be eliminated.

Alf Bargwanna will be our referee for the event and will also act as our Covid Safety Marshall.

It is critical that all competitors in this event comply with Covid safety requirements.  In particular:

  • Sign in to the app on arriving at the course
  • Maintain safe social distancing throughout the event and particularly when we are gathering to hit off at the first hole.

Wray Owen Monthly Mug

After all the rain, the course was in great condition to play our Mug round. The field was down on numbres. The snadwiches were well appreciated after a hard day. I’m sure all players would agree. This was a monthly medal day with results listed below. Next weeks event in Mincove Homes Mug of Mugs. Set out below are results from yesterday’s MUG round. For the immediate term, well award $5 credits for novelty prizes. It is intended that the ball rundown and novemlties will revert to balls once we are allaowed to have post game presentations. The prize for lowest number of putts will be determined when I get a chance to pick up the cards and identify the winner.

In the individual knockout semi-finals, Phil Smith defeated Stev Cornfors and Paul Wallace received a walkover (due to illness of Broan Dwyer).

Phil and Paul will play off to find our individual knock-out champion to be played by the end of the month. The 19 man shootout will be held on Monday 023 November hitting off at 87.30am. I am aware that one player (Leslie McMaster) is unavailable on that day. The top of the reserve list (Lindsay Elliot) therefore gts a run. If any of the other qualifiers are unable to play, can you please let me know so that I can call up a player on the reserve list.

Top 5 placings overall and by grade are listed below.

The overall winner of the Finale was Colin Brigstock, with Ken Stevenson and Michael Hasler tying for runner up.

B Grade:             Ross Elletson

C Grade:             Claudio Dall’Orto

Handicap Divisions for Vets Competitions

I have noticed in the results for the last few weeks that the split across the three grades has become a bit uneven.  We will review the handicap ranges before next weeks round, so those who are currently on the cusps of the current divisions may change grade in next week’s competition.

Next week’s competition

Next week’s event is our Monthly Mug.  It is the start of a new golfing year so it will be the first round of the 2021 Race to October and also the first round of the 2021 Eclectic competition.

Following yesterday’s Mug round, our semi-finalists for the individual knockout have been determined.

Semi Final 1       Steve Cornford  Vs Philip Smith

Steve was fortunate to receive a walkover yesterday and Philip had a 4 and 3 win over Garry Ganderton

Semi Final 2       Paul Wallace Vs Brian Dwyer

Paul beat Les Berghofer 2 and 1 in an earlier separate matchplay game and yesterday Brian had a 4 and 2 win over Ken Stephenson

Congratulations to the 4 semi-finalists.

Because our year-end presentation event will not go ahead in its usual night-time format with accompanying people and any replacement event is unlikely to happen before the end of November, we have been able to relax the schedule for completion of semi final matches.

The deadline for completion of these matches has been extended to Wednesday 4th November.  It is up to each pair of players to arrange to play their match by this deadline – either as a standalone matchplay game on a day of their choosing or, because the 4th of November is a Mug (stroke) round, the option exists for the matches to be played on that day – provided both players play in the same group.

…and the Player of the Year is

As was the case last year, finding our Player of the Year has gone right to the wire.

Our three players in contention going into the final round played together today and for different periods during the final round each of the three had taken the lead in today’s round.

The final scores recorded by the three in today’s round were as follows:

Ken Stevenson  Gross 86             Net 73

Colin Brigstock Gross 77             Net 69

Brian Herring     Gross 81             Net 74

Colin’s score was good enough to come 8th today and earn 85 points.

Ken and Brian finished outside the top 18 and hence earned 5 points each. The smaller field of 44 players meant that the points on offer were reduced with 170 points for the winner  (instead of 200) and only 18 places earning points above the 5 you get for completing the round (instead of 20).

With Colin earning 80 points more than Ken, Colin was able to just catch up to Ken with both players ending up on 2200 points for the season.

Not having previously contemplated a tie for Player of the Year, Alf Bargwanna (Captain) and Bruce Ryan  (Vice-Captain) were asked to adjudicate on a course of action, with the decision being made to declare Ken and Colin joint winners.

So, congratulations goes to Ken Stephenson and Colin Brigstock as our 2020 Race to October joint Players of the Year.

This week’s event is D & Y Superfinish Single Stableford and Round 1 Race to October.

Individual Knockout Draw – First Round this Wednesday

This Wednesday is the first Round of the Vets Individual Knockout.  Attached is the draw for the event. Entries were based on those who had entered Wednesday’s competition as at 5:30pm this afternoon. A copy of the draw will be at the pro shop on Wednesday.

For the draw, seedings were based on the number of rounds played to date in the 2020 Race to October.  For players on the same number of rounds, their order was randomly sorted by computer.

As we have 57 players in the knockout, there are 7 byes in the first round.  This means that the 7 players with the most rounds played were the lucky recipients of a bye in the first round.

For the knockout, the first three rounds will be “head to head” competitions where the winner of each pairing will be the best score on the day in our normal vets competition.  If scores are the same, standard countback rules as applied by the computer will be used.

The results of these three rounds will be processed by computer and published in time for competitors to know who they are up against in the next round. When we get to the final 8 players, the competition will revert to matchplay, with pairings given 3 weeks to complete their games.

The full schedule of dates for the knockout is as follows:

Round 1:            Head to Head    2nd September

Round 2:            Head to Head    9th September

Round 3:            Head to Head    16th September

Quarter Final     Matchplay          Complete by 7th October

Semi Final          Matchplay          Complete by 28th October

Final                   Matchplay          Complete by 11 November

Thank you to Alf and the committee for providing sandwiches purchased from the club for all on Mug day. Much appreciated by the members.

Best of luck to all participants

Solomon Motors Single Stableford 23 September 2020

Well we had the winds again today but there was still some good scoring. Well done to those people. The grass is coming back nicely on the greens so putting will get easier from now on. The magpie is still having fun with us on the  14th but that should stop soon. As I mentioned last week the new cart sheds should be completed in the next few weeks. Don’t forget the next round of match play has to be completed by 7th October. This week’s round will be the Hotondo Homes Single Stableford in conjunction with 4BBB. The Monthly Mug and putting will be on 7th October. Please stay clear of the construction site. All results are listed below.

Sad News

It is with some sadness that I have to report that one of our members, Egon Bennies passed away suddenly on Monday.

Details of funeral arrangements etc will be passed on when they are known.

With the ever consistent Ken Stephenson snaring 2nd place yesterday and Colin Brigstock again failing to find form, Ken has taken over as leader in the Race to October.

Good points-scoring rounds by Brian Herring and Paul Wallace have kept those two players well and truly in the hunt for the Player of the Year Award.

Unfortunately, despite a good round earning him 75 points, John Peters, now being 525 points behind Ken, is now out of the race to become Player of the Year.

Ken, Colin, Brian and Paul will battle it out over the next two Wednesday’s to see who takes home the coveted title.

Paul, being 275 points behind Ken, will need a winning score next week to remain in the race going into the final week.

These four players will be drawn together for the final round on 7th October.  A hitoff time of 9:00am has been reserved for this group.

Full results after the round on 23 September are attached.  There are still a couple of players who can qualify for the Finale by getting to the minimum 15 games played.

And remember, your position on the points table determines how many bonus stableford points you receive for the 54-hole Finale being held on 14/21/28 October.

So every point you can earn in the next 2 weeks can make a difference to your starting points for the Finale!

Booth Partners Single Stableford 16 September 2020

We played Booth Partners Single Stableford in conjunction with 4BBB. There was a good roll up of 62 players in beautiful spring weather. Winners and the next round of match play are listed below. My prediction for the quarter finals are Cornford, Ganderton, Wallace and Stevenson. This week’s event is the Solomon Motors Single Stableford and Memorial Day. Wednesday 30th September will be Single Stableford in conjunction with 4BBB. Monthly Mug will be on the 7th October. Good to see all the renovations coming along nicely. Cart sheds are nearing completion and Pro Shop bricks are being laid. Members please observe working areas and keep clear.

Winners in today’s individual and 4BBB stableford events were as follows

Individual Knockout

In the vets individual knock out, the winners of Round 3 Head to Head matches are highlighted below.

Some really tight matches, with four of the eight matches decided by countback and 2 others by a single point.

Round 3 Head to Head Matches in conjunction with Stableford Event on 16 September 2020

Steeden, Allan35vsCornford, Steve40
Bennett, Greg33vsLiddy, Michael33
Smith, Philip31vsMagill, Wayne31
Ganderton, Garry39vsCockburn, Ian39
Wallace, Paul35vsBeckenham, Wayne31
Berghofer, Les35vsBurgess, Col34
Dwyer, Brian36vsElletson, Ross35
Stevenson, Ken37vsHenderson, Kevin37

The knockout now changes to matchplay, with the quarter final match-ups being as follows

Cornford, Steve vs Bennett, Greg

Smith, Philip vs Ganderton, Garry

Wallace, Paul vs Berghofer, Les

Dwyer, Brian vs Stevenson, Ken

These matches MUST be played by Wednesday 7th October.  It is up to the players involved to arrange a time for the match to be played.

Whilst it is preferable that matchplay not be played at the same time as any other competition, under a Golf NSW dispensation, the match can be played in conjunction with the stroke play round we have scheduled for 7th October.  If this option is used, both players must play in the same group, abiding by normal strokeplay rules but with the matchplay result being determined hole by hole.  Unfortunately, for the ensuing semi-final there is no stroke round available in the window of available dates so these matches will need to be scheduled separately from other events.

If a quarter final match is not completed by 7 October, then the Event Match Committee (Colin B, Alf B , Bruce R) will consider the circumstances and declare a winner if one player has been less than cooperative in finding a time for the match or default both players if there has not been a good attempt by both players to complete the match by the 7 October.

Race to October

The update of the Race to October leaderboard will be distributed via a separate email when results have been compiled.

…and then there were 6

Attached is the full leaderboard following the stableford event on 16 September.  The results for the top 8 were as follows

With our leader Colin Brigstock only gaining minimum points and with three of the top six (Ken, Brian and Kevin) getting amongst the points, the leaderboard has tightened up considerably.

While recording solid scores on Wednesday, Michael Liddy and Les Berghofer also only earned the minimum 5 points and have now dropped out of contention to be our 2020 Race to October Player of the Year.

Those still in contention should note that in the final round (on 7 October) there will be a seeded draw, with the top 4 drawn to play in the same group.  A tee time of around 9:00am will be reserved for this group.

58 players have now qualified for the Finale and there are another 4 players who can get to the minimum 15 rounds needed for qualification.

Wray Owen Vets Monthly Mug 9 September 2020

Player of the Year

With 4 weeks to go (and therefore 800 points theoretically available to a player winning all 4 weeks!), the Race to October Player of the Year award has narrowed to 8 players.

Colin Brigstock is currently our leader with 2020 points.  Brian Herring is 2nd, 215 points behind Colin.  Brian and Colin have held the top 2 positions on the leaderboard since early December 2019.

It is worth noting that our leader has had  a drop-off in form over the last 6 weeks which combined with strong performances from many of those chasing him, his lead has been cut from 460 points (at 24 June) to 215 points (at 9 September), hence only just over 1 win in front of the ever consistent Brian Herring and our 2019 Player of the Year Ken Stevenson (220 points behind Colin).  Paul Wallace (305 points behind) has maintained steady form holding down 3rd or 4th place throughout the period since the resumption in May.

Ken Stevenson and John Peters have been the two players to move rapidly up the leaderboard since the Race resumed in May.  Ken has moved from 26th on the leaderboard to 3rd and John has moved from 31st to 5th (535 points behind).

The remaining players within 780  points of Colin are Kevin Henderson (575 points behind), Michael Liddy (665 points behind) and Les Berghofer (670 points behind).

Race to October 54 Hole Stableford Finale

This event is held over the last three Wednesday’s in October and is styled on the structure of the Fedex Cup Tour Championship with eligible players receiving bonus stableford points based on their finishing position on the Race to October leaderboard.  Players are eligible for this event if they have completed at least 15 rounds in the regular events included in the Race to October.  At this stage, 56 players have qualified for the event and there are 8 players who can reach the minimum 15 games by the end of the regular season.  The attached leaderboard shows how many rounds players have competed in.

The bonus points awarded for the Finale are as follows:

Player of the Year  8 points
2nd place 7 points
3rd to 29th  7 to 2 points (depends on how points the player is behind 1st place)
30th 2 points
31st to 50th 1 point

Based on the points at 9 September, I have estimated that about 500 points will be needed to get into the top 50 and about 850 points will get you into the top 30.

So, with 4 weeks to go, and 200 points generally available to the winner each week (and top 20 earning points above the 5 points minimum allocated for completing the round) all players are in a position to progress up the leaderboard and gain extra bonus points for the finale.

Thank you to Alf and the committee for providing sandwiches purchased from the club for all on Mug day. Much appreciated by the members.

Vets Knockout

This Wednesday is the first Round of the Vets Individual Knockout.

Best of luck to all participants

Colin Brigstock

Lahene Plumbing Canadian Foursomes

The great weather was finally back with us today. Congratulations to all winners. Results are below. The gross winners from the playoffs were decided after the weekly round. The winner in A Grade was Brian Herring and in C Grade Stu Dossetor. Well played boys. Good to see Alf back from injury. Bob “The Tiger “could be coming out of hibernation soon after a long layoff. The Monthly Mug will now be played on 9th August. Next week will be a Single Stableford. The greens are being cored on Monday the 7th August hence the change for The Mug.

Championship Play-offs

The Vets championship play-offs were held today.  In the Overall Vets Championship, Brian Herring was the victor by one shot over Michael Liddy.  In C Grade, Stu Dossetor survived a shaky finish to be victorious by 1 shot over Phil Smith with Garry Dwyer in third place.

Congratulations to Brian and Stu.

On Wednesday we played PB Smash Repairs Single Stableford. With no carts allowed the numbers were down to 39. It appears that all players thankfully finished before the wind got up. Sending wishes for a speedy recovery to our members: Alf, who has had neck surgery and Greg who has had surgery on his ankle.

Next week we should be back to some sort of normal for the Canadian Foursomes.

Course update 17 August

There is only a slight chance that the course will be open for play this Wednesday and if it is, it is almost certain carts will NOT be allowed on the course.

Given the uncertainty about Wednesday and the likely conditions, Alf and I have decided that the Vets Championship playoffs for A Grade and C Grade will be deferred until the following Wednesday (26th August).  The playoffs will take place after those involved have completed their rounds in the  competition on that day (Canadian Foursomes).

If any of those involved in the playoffs (A: Brian Herring, Mick Liddy; C: Phil Smith, Garry Dwyer, Stu Dosseter) are unavailable on the 26th please let me know so that we can figure out an alternative date.

The first round of the individual knockout will now be held in conjunction with the Mug Round on 2 September.

By the way, the Mens 36 hole Foursomes Championships due to be held this Saturday 22nd August have been postponed to some time in October.

  • For the Overall and A Grade Vets Championship, Michael Liddy and Brian Herring tied on 244, so the winner of a playoff  will be Vets Champion and the other will be A Grade champion
  • In B Grade, Ken Stevenson was a clear winner with a score of 268, 7 shots ahead of Peter Conlon
  • In C Grade, three players were tied on 296: Stuart Dossetor, Philip Smith and Garry Dwyer.
  • The program book specifies that in the event of ties in Championship events, there will be a three-hole playoff and then sudden death if still tied. Alf and I are aiming to organise the playoffs to be held next Wednesday immediately following our normal competition.

Bushfire Benefit Day

A big thank you to all who played in the Bushfire Benefit Day last Sunday. There was a big roll up which takes a lot of organisation. Big thanks to all who organised and assisted on the day. It was a great day and lots of fun. I’m sure all will agree. I’m sure those who benefited are extremely grateful to all concerned.

Race To October from Col Brigstock

As at the end of February, Brian Herring has set a very hot pace and is a clear leader in the 2020 Race to October with 1,140 points.  He has a lead of over 300 points over Colin Brigstock and Paul Wallace.  But, of course, there is still 8 months left in the season!

For the Shootout (to be played on Monday 20 April), our February qualifiers are Chris Pender and Col Burgess.  The six other players who have already qualified in previous months are Brian Herring, Colin Brigstock, Paul Wallace, Ivan Barrette, Richie Lydon and Wayne Beckenham.  Remember that the top 2 points scorers for the month of March will also qualify.  To fill out the field of 19, the next 9 players on the Race to October leaderboard as at the end of March will also qualify.  If there are Top 19 players who will not be available to play on 20th April, then the next players on the leaderboard will replace them.  If you are high up on the leaderboard and you  know you are unable to play on the 20th April, please let Colin know

Next week is Monthly Mug with an 8:30 shotgun start

Good to see that all three grades are represented in the Top 5.  For the Finale, there are prizes for the Overall Winner and Runner Up as well as Winner and Runner Up in each Grade (but a player cannot win both overall and grade prizes).

The full listing of player’s positions after Round 2 will be posted on the noticeboard (and on the pillar next Wednesday).

Race to October Player of the Year

Update after round on 2nd October

With just ONE week remaining, we have a new leader and 4 players still in the hunt for the title of Player of the Year.

With an 8th place today, Ken Stevenson earned 90 points (total points 1760) to take a 30 point lead over the previous leader Paul Wallace (1730 points).  Allan Steeden (1665 points) is 95 points behind Ken and Les Cuka (1645 points) is 115 points behind.  With 185 points available for winning next week (assuming 50-54 players), any of these three players have the possibility of overtaking Ken in the final round of the regular season.

The 5th player on the leaderboard is Les Berghofer on 1565 points.  Being 195 points behind, a win next week by Les would leave him just behind Ken’s points.

Race to October Stableford Finale

Remember that your position on the Race to October leaderboard will determine how many bonus stableford points you will receive for The Race to October Stableford Finale which will be conducted over 54 holes in conjunction with the three stableford rounds on the 16th, 23rd and 30th October.

A full listing of the leaderboard will be on the notice board later this week.  Two players (Ian Cockburn and Neville Catterall) need to play next week in order to each the minimum of 23 games needed to be eligible for Finale prizes.

21 hearty golfers took to the course in what looked like a pretty lousy day but low and behold  the day blossomed into a really majestic day. To the 40 players that bowed out the conditions were quite good.

It looked like a minor miracle was about to take place Alf  Bargwanna was in the Clubhouse on 39 pts and looked the over all winner when down the outside flashed Chris Pender with 42 pts a great round .Poor Alfie maybe one day.

Every one that stayed for the Presentation was generously rewarded with a ball.Next week is Calderwood bus leaving right on 7 -00 Am returning at 3-00pm.If you have your name up and don’t turn up you still have to pay as there are no cancellations at Calderwood. Race to October

Update after round on 11 September

To be eligible for any of the Race to October prizes, players must have completed at least 23 rounds during the regular season.  There are 3 rounds remaining in the regular season.

As at 11 September, 49 players have already played at least 23 rounds and there are another 8 who can reach 23 games by the end of the regular season.  Names in italics on the leaderboard indicate players who need additional rounds to qualify.

Race to October “Player of the Year”

The points leader at the end of the regular season will be anointed the Race To October Player of the Year.  As this trophy is a recognition of our most consistent performer over the year, this competition will be all grades combined.

After the Mug round on 11 September, Paul Wallace (with a 5th placing and 155 points) has taken a 65 point lead in the “Player of the Year” race.  The Race remains quite tight with many of the Top 10 players a good chance of catching Paul over the next three weeks.

Race to October Stableford Finale

The Race to October Stableford Finale will be conducted over 54 holes in conjunction with the three stableford rounds on the 16th, 23rd and 30th October.  For the Finale, in addition to the overall Finale winner, we will also have Grade winners.  For this event, players will receive bonus stableford points based on the Race to October leaderboard points they have achieved during the regular season.  The leaderboard put up on the pillar outside the pro shop on Wednesday’s shows the number of rounds played and the bonus points which would have applied had that round been the last round of the season.

It would be much appreciated if you remember to rake the bunkers.

Nominations for positions at next month’s AGM should be on the noticeboard this week.
